A TV tuner for your iPad
BUFFALO 1Seg (DH-ONE/IP)
What is it?
The Buffalo 1Seg is a full-fledged TV tuner with a built-in antennae that can
turn your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad into a miniature HD TV. Together with
Buffalo's 1Seg App, available in the Japanese App Store, for about US$100, you
can watch live TV virtually anywhere. Weighing in at only about 20 grams, the iSeg includes its own battery to
maximize your device's battery life.
Where can you get one?
I was in Tokyo as recently as November 2010, and despite my best efforts, I was
unable to locate the Buffalo 1Seg in any electronics retailer I visited.
They can be purchased online, however. For more information about the
Buffalo 1Seg, visit their Website.
I haven't yet had an opportunity to give this one a try yet, and I suspect that it not compatible with over-the-air US television broadcasts.
But, it seems worthy of a trip to Japan just to give it a try!
From BUFFALO?
For many of us, the name Buffalo has become almost synonymous with low-end
peripherals that sometimes rank below even the most modest of expectations.
For the most part, products like the Buffalo Terastation series of NAS drives
are typically very dependable, reasonably priced, and packed with features -
some of which can still sometimes endorse the general feeling that Buffalo takes
products to the marketplace before they're ready, however. Buffalo peripherals generally
do one thing very well. And, I would expect that a product marketed as a
TV tuner for the iPad should do exactly what it promises. Just don't expect
miracles when it comes to their software: an unfortunate trouble spot for many
Buffalo products. But, if you are interested in watching over-the-air TV
on your iPad, Buffalo has you covered (at least, while in Japan)!
